Backgammon: A Trip Down Memory Lane

Backgammon is the oldest known board game as it dates back some 5000 years ago. It began in Mesopotamia as a leisure game. Now, backgammon is becoming a popular game at the online gaming with such name as Bac Gamen, or sometimes Weetle Battle.

Backgammon is a game of chance, but more on strategy and skills. Honing the skills for beginners in backgammon means constant playing and regular practice of the game. Backgammon for beginners is composed of two players, and the materials used are the backgammon board, 15 backgammon pieces in black and white for each players, a pair of dice, and twenty four triangles or points. The backgammon board looks pretty much the same as that of the chess board, the difference is that the there are points laid on backgammon boards. Beginners in backgammon should take note that each player has his own home and outer boards. For beginners, the main objective in this game is to be able to move all the pieces past to your opponent and remove the same off the board.

The beginners' moves

Correspondingly, each player has 15 pieces of either the black or white color. The white pieces moves clockwise and the black pieces move counter clockwise. To determine who will take the first move, a dice is rolled by each player. Whoever gets the highest number in the dice will have his first turn in the game , starting on the numbers from the dice that was thrown by him. For beginners, it is important to know that the dice accounts for two separate numbers. If for example you rolled a 5 and a 4, there are two choces of moves you can make. One is to move 9 spaces and the other is to move first 5 spaces and then move to another 4 spaces.

For beginners, you can only move the piece into open points, meaning that the triangle does not contain two or more of the opponents' pieces. New players and beginners alike in backgammon should keep on playing the game till they have mastered their moves because it really requires one to be well versed in his moves.
